Digital Modes

Packet radio: APRS beacons, maps and messages, the radio fax and the teletype.

APRS Station

#
H19 APRS Terminal

APRS sends short packets over a VHF radio: position beacons, messages and digipeats.

  • The Radio Interface touches the radio and holds the call sign and the TX switch.
  • The H19 terminal touches the interface (or another terminal): beacons, the station list and messages.

The H19

The H19's screen says READY, CONTACT when a new station is heard and MSG when a message arrives.

Right click it with an empty map for an APRS map of the stations heard. Sneak with 4 or 9 maps for a 2x2 or 3x3 map wall.

A weather station nearby adds the weather to its beacons; a microwave link carries APRS to far sites.

Radio Fax

#
Oak Radio Fax

The Radio Fax sends books, paper, maps and enchanted books to another fax by call sign, through the radio it touches or the Radio Interface on its station. The far machine prints a copy on its own blank (paper, book or empty map); the sender keeps the original, except an enchanted book, which is used up.

Type the call sign on the little LCD (or click one used lately) and press SEND. The fax calls, the far end answers once it has a blank and room in its tray, and thirty packets follow, each acknowledged. Over a weak signal some are lost and go again: the LCD counts them.

On VHF a map takes 20 seconds and a book 10 a page; HF bands are slower (10m twice, 80m eight times), a microwave link ten times faster.

Teletype

#
Teletype Machine

The Teletype Machine sends RTTY through the radio it touches: type, and it goes out live; weak copy prints garbled. It needs paper (by hand or hopper).

Its blue SOLAR WX lamp asks an Ionospheric Processor for the solar report, over the air or directly if one touches it or its radio.

Scroll back up the roll with the wheel, or Page Up and Down. Sneak and right click the machine with an empty hand to tear the Teletype Roll off and keep it: right click the roll to read it anywhere, or right click a teletype whose roll is empty to feed it back in.
